Tips from Trainer, April Younghaus

April is the longest standing employee at Pivotal Fitness Columbia, teaching Group Fitness classes and Personal Training. April has certifications in Cycle, CXWORX, RPM, and ACE.

1.) What is your favorite exercise that you use most frequently to train your clients, and why?

I love to use exercises that incorporate multiple muscle groups including the core such as the one-legged deadlift.  I feel that tuning in to how the body works and feels in a functional way is so important to prevent injury and keep the body strong. I encourage my clients to use balance and core engaging exercises in their  lives while performing every day activities, not just in the gym.

2.) How do you stay motivated throughout the year to stick to your fitness routine?
Helping others achieve their goals motivates me to stay on top of mine!  I love the feeling I get after a challenging workout and seeing the improvement in my strength pushes me to take it further.  Plus, I know that when I skip a workout, I tend to feel sluggish.  Getting the blood pumping energizes me in a way nothing else can!
3.) What tip would you give to people that are struggling to stay on track?
Don’t get caught up in what you haven’t achieved yet.  Focus on the progress you have made and hang on to the positivity that you WILL achieve more!
4.)What is your favorite inspirational quote or mantra?
“We do not dare because things are difficult, things are difficult because we do not dare.”  Making positive changes is all in the mindset.  Our minds can be our most powerful ally or biggest enemy.  Choose to make small changes each day and they will add up to big changes over your lifetime.
5.) What is your advice for those who want to work out regularly, but don’t really know where to start? What should be the first step for a healthy lifestyle?
The first step for a healthy lifestyle is to choose one thing to focus on and make a commitment to do it.  This could be choosing to add in one more serving of vegetables each day or switching to drinking just water instead of sweetened beverages. Tell someone about your decision and have them keep you accountable!  Find a trainer who can guide you on how to put together a solid workout program and make sure you are performing exercises with good form to keep you safe.  If that’s not an option, find a friend who is a step beyond where you would like to be and learn how they achieved their goals.  Surround yourself with positive minded people who will motivate you to push yourself farther than you would on your own.  Remember that results don’t happen overnight, but if you stick with it, you will see change.
