The Purpose of Functional Fitness Training

Strengthening your muscles and training them to help you perform everyday activities more effortlessly and without injury is the primary goal of functional fitness exercises. These exercises provide a way to incorporate and build up the multiple muscles used for the things we do each day such as lifting our children or carrying groceries.

Often people focus on one kind of exercise, but to be truly effective, it’s important to include many different types of movements to build flexibility, endurance, strength, and balance. Core strength and stability is a key component in functional fitness. In fact, whenever a movement is made from one position to another, the core is tightened first. For maintaining posture or lifting heavy weights, core stability is essential. Additionally, insufficient core strength can result in greater risk for lower back pain and leg injuries.

Yet, by training our muscles and joints to work together, we can prepare our bodies to perform well in our common activities, improving our balance, strength and agility.

As we begin these exercises we become stronger and more energetic, and are able to do things easier, faster, and for longer than before.

Functional fitness exercises can be done using bodyweight alone, or by using various aids such as weights, fitness balls, or kettlebells. Although most of us lead busy lives, being active is one of the main things you can do to maintain your health and the quality of your life.

In just half an hour, you can build a better foundation with a variety of functional exercises directed at overall body strength, and postural perfection by targeting abs, glutes, and core strength in our Core Cuts class.
